Fateful New Year’s Eve Happenings In Country Music History

New Year’s Eve was not too kind to a number of country music legends. Way back on December 31, 1947, Roy Rogers was late for his own wedding to Dale Evans at the Flying L Ranch because he had to put out a fire in another room. The cause of the fire… a cigarette butt.

On December 31, 1952, Hank Williams was supposed to fly from Knoxville to Charleston, West Virginia for a New Year’s Eve show, but the flight was grounded due to bad weather. Hank gets a shot of morphine and hops in the back seat of his Cadillac for the ride. It turns out to be his final ride anywhere…

And, on December 31, 1985, Rick Nelson died when the plane he was in crashed outside of DeKalb, Texas. Nelson was the star of the TV series ‘The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and he scored a couple of country hits with Stood Up and Poor Little Fool.

Be safe out there everyone. I want to see you all back right here tomorrow.

New Year’s Eve 1990 – A Lucky Day For Clint Black And Lisa Hartman

*After his show at the Houston Summit on New Year’s Eve 1990, Clint Black met Lisa Hartman, whom he would marry in October 1991. And, unlike many other high-profile “celebrity” couples, they’re still married today.

On This Day In 2002, Big Kenny Was In Major Debt And Down to His Last Dollar

I don’t know Big Kenny personally (except virtually through Twitter), but I’ve gotta think that December 31st is always a very emotional day for him. On this day back in 2002, Kenny was in debt over $140,000 and he proceeded to lose most of his last $200 playing blackjack in a casino. He gave the dealer a $20 tip and left with one dollar in his pocket.*

Obviously, Big Kenny managed to not only turn his life around, but he’s managed to entertain and more importantly, inspire countless fans around the world. That experience of leaving the casino with only one dollar inspired him to write Tim McGraw’s future number one hit Last Dollar (Fly Away) (see video below). Said Kenny about that night, “That night as I looked down at the sole breaking off of my shoe it hit me like a ton of bricks, but with that realization came the freedom of knowing that I also had nothing to lose.”

Here’s Big Kenny back in Vegas at the Hard Rock singing Last Dollar (Fly Away). Enjoy, be careful tonight and happy New Year everyone!
